Hello Happy friends!
Are you ready to learn?

I’m Sarah, and today, we’re going to talk about various sweet and fun inventions.
Today, we’re going to learn about the story behind lollipops and chewing gum.

Creativity, is one of the most important qualities that we humans have.
Because of it, we can invent and create new things to make our lives easier.
And in many cases, we can make life a lot more fun and a lot sweeter.

Look at this sweet! It’s a lollipop
But, do you know who invented it? Do you know who came up with the idea of putting a stick on a normal sweet?

Well it was this man who came up with the idea, Enric, Bernat, a Spanish Man.
He invented the lollipop in the late 50s.
He thought of this idea, because he realised that children took sweets out of their mouths, to rest from sucking them.
And obviously, they got their hands all sticky!

Their success was so big, that in 1979, there were more than 10 thousand million units sold worldwide!
That’s so shocking!

Now, let’s talk about… Chewing gum!
But... did you know that chewing gum was invented by… Nature itself!

Exactly!
The first chewing gum was obtained by the Mayans, more than 2000 years ago, in the resin from a mexican tree called “chicozapote”. What a name!

They used to call this gum, “chicli” and today, in Spanish, it’s called chile.
The Mayans used this resin to clean their teeth.

But, we have actual chewing gum, as we know it today, thanks to Antonio Lopez de Santana, Mexico’s ex president, and Thomas Adams, an American.

In the late 19th century, they tried to make all kinds of products with this rubber, like boots, wheels, and many other things! But… they failed!

But then, Adams thought of creating a sweet that could be chewed but not swallowed. And he made it possible to blow bubbles!
That’s why we call it bubble gum!

It was a complete success, to the point, where chewing gum today is consumed almost everywhere in the world!

Well! now we know the stories behind lollipops and chewing gum.
But… Remember! We always need to eat healthy, and only eat sweets now and again!

Goodbye happy friends! See you next time!

I hope you’re always ready to learn!

Goodbye!
